Universal Roofing and Contracting in Jacksonville reroofed our entire two-story flat roof home in March, 2025. It took us over a year to decide on which roofer to select after meeting with and gathering proposals from eight different roofing company representatives. We are so happy we chose Universal! From start to finish, David Alger, Company Representative, thoroughly explained the best solution for our reroof and was available during the entire process to answer any questions we had. David even used a drone camera to take pictures of the entire roofing and provided us with an online album of it. Justin Green, Project Manager, was onsite throughout the process to direct and monitor the progress. Merrissa Tyrrell, Operations Coordinator sent messages that kept us informed of the exact dates for every upcoming event and any changes and was available to answer questions. Although we were most fearful of ripping off our entire roof down to the sheathing, many workers were on the roof to get the tear-off done quickly. With three dumpsters in our long driveway close to the house, it was a BIG job! The roofing was accomplished quickly and efficiently. The entire work area was cleaned and checked magnetically for nails. Altogether, it was a process that did not merit all our worry! Thank you to all from Universal Roofing for a great job. We would certainly recommend Universal Roofing and Contracting in Jacksonville for your next roofing project. Brenda and Darrell Shields, Jacksonville Beach Florida

Universal Roof & Contracting in Jacksonville is a highly reputable company! I'd recommend them to any home owner or building owner looking for a trustworthy source for any roof, soffit and fascia or gutter related work!
Very professional and the process was quick and simple
Repairs needed resulted from tree damage during inclement weather. David Alger facilitated not only a satisfactory repair but also provided significant documentation and professional advice that aided me with arbitration. Insurance company underestimated extent of damage, amount of material needed and listed material that did not meet Florida building code. David Alger offered his professional expertise with identifying these errors and resulted in my successful challenge to the insurance company during arbitration. A satisfactory financial settlement was reached. Thank you David and Universal Roofing.
Daniel Elek from Universal Roof & Contracting took care of the items from the list from the home inspection. Daniel was professional, courteous, on time and did a superb job. I would highly recommend Universal Roofing. He was outstanding and efficient. He was very competent, honest and straightforward.
If you are looking for an honest assessment, fair pricing, and straight talk about your roof, reach out to Devon at Universal.
I would definitely recommend this company. We had a stubborn roof leak on a metal roof of a 6 yr old house. Universal sent out several experts to assess what was going on. It ended up being a misplaced vent that wasn’t properly installed & sealed from the builder. After trial & error, Universal decided to replace the panels surrounding the vent…. that was it. We can now get our kitchen ceiling fixed and get on with it. Of course the builder is no longer in business so we have no way to recoup our money.
El señor Alex vino a hacer una inspección de mi techo. fue muy amable y me explicó todo de forma muy clara y precisa. Recomiendo totalmente universal roof and contracting y a Alex
Sean Dowel was an impressive appraiser and adjusted, he talked the talk, but also walked the walk. Of the 5 inspectors I had he was the only one who went into the attic and checked if my current ventilation even met the standards of the product. He was quick, communicated well and did an amazing job representing their company, product and services. They are obviously not the cheapest company, but when getting something as important as a roof I'd rather pay a little more for it to be done right than to have corners cut.

What Jacksonville Beach Does to a Roof
Every roofing decision in Jacksonville Beach traces back to three forces, and the numbers behind them show why installation quality matters here.
Sun
Strong sun breaks down shingle asphalt and fades finishes over time, so Florida roofs need regular checks.
Salt
Atlantic salt air corrodes exposed metal fasteners, flashing, and gutter seams. Corrosion-resistant materials matter this close to the coast.
Storms
Summer squall lines and the occasional named storm bring hard, wind-driven rain that finds every weak detail.
53.4"
annual rainfall at the Jacksonville station
54%
of it falls June through September

Roof Repair in Jacksonville Beach
Roof trouble in Jacksonville Beach rarely announces itself. It starts as one lifted shingle or a slow drip at a flashing joint — and the difference between a cheap fix and a big one is how soon someone looks.

We run repair crews through the First Coast year-round. The visit covers the damage plus the field, flashing, and penetrations around it — repairs that buy years beat replacements that weren't necessary yet.
Emergencies get tarped same-visit where access allows, with the permanent fix documented in photos behind it.
Wind-lifted tabs
One good gust finds every marginal fastener. Small patch now, or decking work later.
Granules in the gutters
Shingle surfaces shedding — the field is aging, and it's time to watch it.
Ceiling stains
By the time water shows inside, it's been traveling the deck for a while. Call now, not next month.
Flashing and fastener wear
A common leak point, and one Florida weather works on early.
Roof Replacement
What actually drives a replacement quote — and how concealed damage is handled if tear-off uncovers it.

A completed Universal replacement — one to three days on most homes.
We install to manufacturer specification with the underlayment and ventilation the warranty actually requires — as an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor (a tier held by fewer than 1% of roofing contractors), we offer warranty protection most roofers can't. The estimate is line-by-line, and the price you approve is the scope we build; change orders only happen when opened decking reveals something no one could see, and you approve those too.
Two planning notes from thousands of projects across the First Coast: replace end-of-life soffit, fascia, and gutters with the roof — one mobilization, every connected component sealed at once — and if you have flexibility, fall timing puts a fresh roof over you before storm season instead of after it. Most residential replacements in Jacksonville Beach finish in one to three days.
Size, pitch & complexity
Cut-up roofs with dormers and valleys take longer than simple gables — and price accordingly.
Tear-off & decking
How many layers come up, and what the decking looks like once exposed. You approve anything it reveals.
The material system
Shingle, metal, tile, or slate — specified for Florida exposure, not upsold.
Flashing & ventilation
The details that separate a code-minimum job from one that reaches its rated life.
Every Jacksonville Beach replacement starts with the free inspection.
Roof Inspections
Check your roof twice a year, in spring and fall, plus after any major blow. Our inspection is free, documented, and pressure-free.
Field & fasteners
Wear, granule loss, and fastener condition across the whole covering.
Flashing & penetrations
Common leak points, so we check every boot, valley, and transition.
The roof edge
Soffit, fascia, and gutters for rot, separation, and pest entry.
The attic side
Moisture staining, ventilation problems, and daylight where there shouldn't be any.
Coastal corrosion
Salt-air wear on fasteners and flashing gets extra attention on every coastal roof.
Findings come back as photographs and a written condition report — not a verbal opinion from the driveway. Many inspections end with "you're fine, here's what to watch," and the report is yours whether or not you ever hire us. If you're buying or selling in Duval County, the same visit produces the roof documentation the transaction needs, from a licensed contractor rather than a checklist service.

Storm Damage in Jacksonville Beach
Jacksonville Beach faces the Atlantic side of Florida's storm ledger — Matthew, Irma, and Nicole all left marks on this coast. After it passes, a five-minute ground check tells you whether to call.
01 Stay off the roof
Post-storm decks hide soft spots. Everything below can be checked from the ground.
02 Field, ridge, edges
Scan all three from the yard — wind works the perimeter and peaks hardest.
03 Gutters tell the truth
Granules, torn shingle pieces, detached sections — the evidence collects there.
04 Inside, look up
Ceiling corners and closets show water first, sometimes days later.
05 Date, photograph, call
Your ground photos plus our documented assessment make the complete record.
Nicole
November landfall at Vero Beach; storm surge and beach erosion damage up the east coast to Jacksonville (NOAA/NHC TCR AL172022)
Matthew
paralleled the northeast Florida coast; significant wind and surge damage from the Space Coast to Jacksonville (NOAA/NHC TCR AL142016)
Irma
more than 7,000 homes damaged in Brevard County; hurricane-force gusts and record flooding around Jacksonville (NOAA/NHC TCR AL112017)
Storm response here works in two speeds: immediate protection (tarps and temporary seals, same visit where access allows) and documented assessment (photographs, findings, and repair scope in writing). No scare tactics, no inflated damage lists. We have been roofing in Florida since 1993.
Residential Roofing
Drive Jacksonville Beach and you'll see many shingle roofs. Sometimes that's the right call; sometimes it's just the default. Four things decide which.

68.8% of occupied homes in Jacksonville Beach are owner-occupied, and the median owner-occupied home value is $575,800 (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, 2020–2024). Ours is the math of protecting that investment: the right system, installed to specification, maintained on a schedule.
We install every mainstream system — shingle, metal, tile, and flat — so the recommendation follows your house and budget, not whichever material a contractor happens to sell. The full comparison is below.
The house & neighborhood
Age, style, and what the street is built around — a roof has to belong where it lives.
Your ownership horizon
Selling in five years and staying thirty produce different right answers.
Budget, now vs. 30 years
Upfront cost against lifetime cost — repairs, energy, and how many more roofs you'll buy.
Installation quality
The same materials last longer or fail early depending on underlayment, ventilation, and flashing work.
Not sure which of these your roof needs?
The free inspection answers it with photos and a written report.
Commercial Roofing
A commercial roof in Jacksonville Beach protects inventory, equipment, and people, and it is built under the Florida Building Code, rated among the strongest of the hurricane-coast states by IBHS.

Commercial decisions in Jacksonville Beach come down to decades-math: purchase price against energy costs, storm resilience, and maintenance across the building's life. We'll show the comparison for your specific building rather than defaulting to whichever membrane is on the truck.
Then maintenance decides everything: annual and post-storm inspections, drains kept clear, membrane and flashing repairs done promptly. Our plans put all of it on a documented schedule so the roof's history is always current and provable.
The 25% rule
If more than 25% of a roof section is repaired or replaced within 12 months, the whole section must meet current code, unless the roof was built to the 2007 Florida Building Code or later.
Licensing & permits
Commercial roof repairs and installations require a Florida-licensed contractor, and most need a permit from the local building department.
System choice
TPO for energy efficiency; metal for hurricane resistance and lifespan; modified bitumen where the deck calls for it.
Maintenance cadence
Annual and post-storm inspections, clear drains, prompt membrane repairs — where commercial roofs are won or lost.
Gutters, Soffit & Fascia
In Jacksonville Beach, the roof edge is a common place for water damage to start: soffit, fascia, and gutters can fail quietly before anyone notices.

The repair-or-replace call at the edge is simpler than the roof's: contained damage gets patched, widespread rot gets replaced, and either way the smart schedule pairs edge work with a roof project or lands it in fall before storm season. We spec vinyl soffit, aluminum fascia, and seamless gutters as the default Florida kit.
Soft or spongy fascia
The material underneath is already compromised — past the repair window.
Stains on exterior walls
Water escaping the drainage path and running where it shouldn't.
Sagging, overflowing gutters
Chronic overflow usually means repairs are no longer keeping up.
Rust at the seams
Sectional gutters fail at their joints — seamless aluminum has far fewer of them.

| System | Realistic Florida life | Wind rating (installed right) | Cost tier | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metal (standing seam) | Varies by product; ask for the warranty term | Product-specific; we show you the rating | $$$ | Longevity, storms, energy bills |
| Architectural shingle | About 20 years | Class H shingles: rated for design wind speeds up to 194 mph | $ | Value, fast storm repairs |
| Tile (clay/concrete) | Over 50 years | High, code-driven | $$$ | Permanence, the Florida look |
| Metlok (only at Universal) | 50-year limited lifetime warranty | 180+ mph tested wind rating | $$$ | Longevity, high-wind exposure |
What moves every quote regardless of material: pitch and complexity, the product tier within the material, specialist labor where tile demands it, and structural reinforcement when weight requires it. Florida law also requires insurers to offer premium credits for wind-resistant construction features — a wind mitigation inspection documents what your roof qualifies for.

Jacksonville Beach Roofing Questions
How long do roofs last in Jacksonville Beach?
In Jacksonville Beach plan on about 20 years from architectural shingle and more than 50 from clay or concrete tile with proper care, based on a National Association of Home Builders study. Metal life depends on the product, so ask for its warranty term. The installer's discipline matters more to those numbers than the brand on the wrapper.
Repair or replace — how do you decide?
Localized damage on a roof with life left: repair. Widespread wear, repeating leaks, or a roof near the end of its lifespan: replacement is often a better value than repeated patching. We put the recommendation in writing with photos so you can decide without pressure.
What should I do right after storm damage?
Photograph what you can see safely from the ground, note the date, and get a professional inspection before small openings become interior leaks. We handle emergency work across Duval County and put findings in writing with photos.
Can a handyman repair a roof in Florida?
Not legally. Florida's licensing agency says roof repairs and roof installations require a state license. Ask for the license number before hiring anyone; ours are CCC057165 & CBC1258484.
What does a roof replacement cost in Jacksonville Beach?
Five inputs set it: size and pitch, how many layers come off, what the decking looks like underneath, which system goes on, and the detail work at flashings and ventilation. That's why quotes-by-phone are guesses. Ours start with a free inspection and arrive itemized, line by line.
Is the inspection really free?
Completely. You get the walkthrough, the photographs, and a written condition report at no cost, no strings — the report is yours even if we never hear from you again. Most end with 'you're fine, here's what to watch.'
How long does a roof installation take?
Most residential replacements finish in one to three days. Tile and complex roofs run longer, and commercial projects range from days to weeks by size. We give you a realistic window up front.
What time of year is best for roof work here?
Any month works — this is Florida, and roofs can't wait on weather windows anyway. Given the choice, fall wins: easier on crews and materials, and the new roof is in place ahead of storm season rather than behind it.
