Metal Roofs in Florida

Metal roofing is the roof you install and practically forget about. It shrugs off Florida's sun, wind and rain, reflects more of the sun's heat in a light or reflective finish, and is built to last for decades — and today's metal looks nothing like a barn. Standing seam, stone-coated steel, metal shingle and tile profiles give you a modern, high-end look with the toughness a storm state demands.Universal Roof & Contracting is a family-owned Florida roofing contractor founded in 1993, with offices in Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville.

Universal Roofing has been a great company to work with. They just completed re-roofing our house in 2 days, even with rain. They worked tirelessly. If I owned a construction company, I would definitely want the team of Tony Contreras, Project Manager, and Roberto’s crew working for my company. I highly recommend them.

We had our roof done in March 2019 with Universal roofing. Ken, our salesman was amazing through the whole process. Everyone in the office was very easy to work with and they did a great job making sure the yard, etc was cleaned after like nothing ever happened. Our roof looks amazing and I love the color we picked! Would recommend to any friends looking to have their roof replaced!

From beginning to end, Universal Roof & Contracting did a marvelous job. Interestingly, they offered a wind mitigation evaluation. We had an outside person complete it because we wanted to get it done through our insurance. An outsider completed the inspection per USAA's recommendation, and he stated Universal Roof & Contracting did a great job. We were very pleased with the company, from the salesperson on. They kept us apprised of everything and were very, very good.

Why homeowners choose it

Why homeowners upgrade to metal

Install it and forget it

A metal roof is a set-it-and-forget-it roof: it doesn't rot, curl, crack or shed granules, and installed to spec, it's built to hold when the wind arrives. For a lot of homeowners, it's a decades-long answer to a problem they never want to think about again.

Cooler home, lower bills

A metal roof with a reflective or light-colored finish reflects more of the sun's heat than a dark shingle roof, which keeps the attic cooler; the EPA says cool roofs can cut peak cooling demand in air-conditioned homes by 11–27%. In a Florida summer, that shows up on the power bill.

Built for hurricane season

A metal roof installed to spec, with concealed fasteners over solid decking and fastened to code, is built to hold when the wind arrives, and it interlocks into a continuous surface with fewer edges for a storm to lift. Ask us for the wind rating of the exact system we quote. On a peninsula that tests every roof, that matters.

A genuinely high-end look

Worried metal means a barn roof? Today's metal is anything but. Standing seam reads clean and modern, stone-coated steel mimics tile or shake, and metal comes in a wide range of colors and finishes that lift a home's whole exterior.

The options

Which metal roof fits your home?

Standing seam

Popular choice

Vertical panels joined by raised seams with concealed fasteners — the clean, modern metal look, with no exposed screws to back out or leak. The premium choice for a contemporary or high-end home.

Stone-coated steel

Steel panels finished with a stone-granule coating, so you get metal's strength and lifespan with the look of tile, shake or shingle — and a lot less weight than real tile.

Metal shingle & tile

Steel or aluminum stamped and finished to mimic architectural shingle or barrel tile. A metal roof that reads traditional from the curb, for homes and neighborhoods that call for it.

MetlokThe metal we didn't just install — we built

Want a metal roof with the look of slate, shake or barrel tile?

Standard metal is a great roof. We took it further and engineered our own: Metlok, a pressed-steel system with a patent-pending four-way interlock, AZ50 galvalume, and a 50-year limited lifetime warranty — the strength of metal with the look of slate, shake or barrel tile. It's the only metal roof you can't get anywhere else, because we're the ones who make it.

How long a metal roof lasts here

Metal is a decades-long roof. A properly installed metal roof is built to last for decades, and the lifespan you actually get comes down to the metal system and, above all, the quality of the installation. That's the trade at the heart of the metal decision: a higher price up front for a roof built to go the distance.

Decades

Built to last when installed right

Metal is only as good as the crew that seams it

Metal roofing is precision work — the panels, the seams, the flashing and the fastening all have to be exactly right, because a metal roof is meant to outlast the people who install it. We've installed metal across Florida since 1993, we meet the factory-trained warranty criteria for the metal manufacturers we carry, and every metal roof is backed by our workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer's finish warranty.

Questions about metal roofing

Is a metal roof better than shingle?

It depends on your home and budget. A properly installed metal roof is built to last for decades, while an asphalt shingle roof is commonly expected to last around 20 years, and a metal roof with a reflective or light-colored finish keeps the attic cooler than a dark shingle roof. Shingle wins on up-front cost. The right way to decide is total cost over time, and we'll run both numbers for your home at the inspection.

Is a metal roof loud when it rains?

No — that's the barn-roof myth, bare metal over open rafters. A residential metal roof goes over a solid deck, underlayment and attic insulation, which is what keeps rain noise down.

Does a metal roof attract lightning or make my house hotter?

Neither. A metal roof does not make your home more likely to be struck: the National Weather Service says the presence of metal makes absolutely no difference to where lightning strikes. And a metal roof with a reflective or light-colored finish reflects more of the sun's heat than a dark shingle roof, which keeps the attic cooler and can lower summer cooling costs.

How long does a metal roof last in Florida?

A properly installed metal roof is built to last for decades, and the lifespan you actually get comes down to the metal system and the quality of the installation, which is why an experienced metal contractor matters so much on a roof meant to last that long.

How much does a metal roof cost?

After a free inspection we give you a detailed, highly accurate quote based on your roof's size, pitch, complexity, the exact metal system you choose, and labor. We offer multiple financing options, and the quote comes with a project timeline. Any change is documented and approved with you first. Comparing quotes? Our Florida roof buyer's checklist covers the five questions to ask any roofer.

Do you handle the permits?

Yes. Every area in Florida has its own permit requirements, and obtaining them shouldn't be your responsibility — we handle the permitting on every project.

How long will my roof installation take?

It depends on the size and complexity of your roof and the material. A straightforward replacement can be a few days; a large or complex roof takes longer. Your quote includes an estimated timeline.
