If you are consider a roofing contractor, highly recommend Universal Roof and Contracting. Entire team was professional, knowledgable, and honest. Starting with salesman John Lasine to project lead Brian Bower, the level of service has met my expectations. Had a minor leak on skylight 6 months later and they had someone out the same day to address, which speaks volumes to their integrity. There are many roofing contractors out there but if you want one that stands behind their work URC is the one to choose.

Who wants to have a roof replaced? There are many moving parts and it's an ardous and costly process. Hats off to Universal Roof for providing excellent service and doing a terrific job. Mike Emrich, the salesman, and Sebastian Acevedo, the job site supervisor, were attentive and professional throughout the process. I'm happy with the outcome and pleased to recommend them.

About Merritt Island

Merritt Island is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Brevard County. The federal government acquired more than 140,000 acres on the island, north and west of Cape Canaveral, for the John F. Kennedy Space Center. On August 28, 1963, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed with NASA to manage the lands not used for space operations, which now form the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The roughly 900-acre Pine Island Conservation Area includes the Sams family cabin, built in 1875, which Brevard County calls the oldest standing home in the county. The 2020 Census counted 34,518 residents.

The housing stock

Merritt Island Homes and What Their Roofs Face

The weather those roofs answer to is measurable. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for the Orlando Intl Ap station put annual rainfall at 51.45 inches, with 57% of it falling June through September and 8.05 inches in June alone. Most of that rain arrives in summer storms, often wind-driven, and it finds any weak flashing detail on Merritt Island rooflines quickly.

Salt, sun, and that rainfall all work on Merritt Island roofs, and edges, penetrations and fasteners are where we start every inspection.

The named systems

Storms Merritt Island Has Answered To

Merritt Island sits in the Atlantic storm region, and the record is specific: Nicole (2022) — November landfall at Vero Beach; storm surge and beach erosion damage up the east coast to Jacksonville (NOAA/NHC TCR AL172022). Matthew (2016) — paralleled the northeast Florida coast; significant wind and surge damage from the Space Coast to Jacksonville (NOAA/NHC TCR AL142016).

After any of those, the useful thing a homeowner can do is document from the ground: photograph what is visible, note the date, check ceilings that night and again a week later. Then get a professional assessment before small openings become interior damage. We run storm routes across Brevard County and put findings in writing with photographs — no scare tactics, no inflated damage lists.

Not sure which of these your roof needs?

The free inspection answers it with photos and a written report.

Merritt Island Roofing Questions

What time of year is best for roof work here?

Roofing runs twelve months a year across the Space Coast, but if you can choose, choose fall: cooler working conditions, better material handling, and a finished roof standing before the next storm season opens.

What should I do right after storm damage?

Photograph what you can see safely from the ground, note the date, and get a professional inspection before small openings become interior leaks. We handle emergency work across Brevard County and put findings in writing with photos.

Is the inspection really free?

Yes, genuinely: no fee, no obligation, and you keep the written report and photos either way. It's how we've introduced ourselves to Florida homeowners since 1993 — many inspections end with good news and a watch list.
