Narrated edition
In Florida, architectural shingle outlasts three-tab and carries a far higher wind warranty: Owens Corning, for example, backs its Supreme three-tab for 25 years and 60 mph, and its architectural lines with a limited lifetime warranty and wind warranties up to 160 mph. That gap — not appearance — is the real reason most replacements we install here are architectural.
What the two products actually are
Three-tab is a single flat layer of asphalt mat cut into three uniform tabs. It is the flat, repetitive roof you see on older Florida subdivisions. Architectural shingle, also called dimensional or laminate, bonds two or more layers together, which produces both the shadowed depth people notice and, more importantly, a thicker shingle between the weather and your roof deck.
Wind rating is where the decision is really made
Florida's building code is written around wind, and shingle products are rated accordingly. Wind warranties on architectural lines run far higher than on three-tab when installed to specification. In a state where a routine summer afternoon produces gusts that would make national news elsewhere, that difference gets tested annually rather than theoretically.
The words "installed to specification" carry weight. Wind ratings assume the manufacturer's nailing pattern, the correct starter course, and properly sealed edges. A premium shingle installed with four nails where six were specified is no longer a premium shingle in any way that matters.
Lifespan under Florida sun
National lifespan figures do not account for this state. UV exposure, heat cycling and humidity all age asphalt. For planning, HUD's tables use an average useful life of 20 years for asphalt shingle and do not split it by grade:
- Three-tab: the thinner product and the shorter-lived of the two, especially on a west-facing slope with poor attic ventilation.
- Architectural: the thicker product and the longer-lived, with the most life reached on well-ventilated roofs.
Attic ventilation deserves particular attention. A shingle roof cooks from below as well as above, and an under-ventilated attic can strip years off either product regardless of what you paid for it.
Algae resistance, and the black streaks
Those dark vertical streaks on Florida roofs are algae, not dirt. Owens Corning shingles, including its three-tab line, use copper-lined granules to help resist it, and the algae coverage on its architectural lines runs longer. In a humid climate this is a genuine cosmetic difference over a decade, and it is one of the most common things homeowners call us about that turns out not to be damage at all.
Cost, honestly
Architectural costs more than three-tab, but it buys a much higher wind warranty and a longer manufacturer warranty.
We will not publish a per-square price here, because the honest number depends on your roof's size, pitch, tear-off depth and what the decking looks like once it is exposed. Any quote given without seeing the roof is a guess.
When three-tab still makes sense
It is not extinct, and there are legitimate uses: matching an existing roof for a small repair, a detached structure where lifespan matters less, or a property being sold imminently where the buyer will make their own decision. What we will not do is install three-tab on a Florida home someone intends to live in for the next twenty years and call it a good decision.

Questions people ask
Is architectural shingle worth the extra cost in Florida?
Usually, yes. Architectural costs more than three-tab, but it buys a much higher wind warranty and a longer manufacturer warranty.
How long do architectural shingles last in Florida?
HUD's planning tables use an average useful life of 20 years for asphalt shingle and do not split it by grade; architectural is the thicker product and outlasts three-tab. Florida UV, heat cycling and humidity all age asphalt, and attic ventilation is a big variable.
What wind rating do architectural shingles have?
Wind warranties on architectural lines run far higher than on three-tab when installed to specification. Using Owens Corning's own figures, its Duration architectural shingle carries a wind warranty of up to 160 mph when installed with Owens Corning components and starter shingles at the eaves and rakes, against 60 mph for its Supreme three-tab. The warranty only holds if the installation matches the manufacturer's specification: correct nailing pattern, starter course and sealed edges.
Can I put architectural shingles over an existing three-tab roof?
Florida code permits a second layer in limited circumstances, but we rarely recommend it: you cannot inspect the decking, the weight increases, and the new roof inherits any problem underneath. A tear-off shows you what you are actually buying.
Do architectural shingles stop black streaks?
Owens Corning shingles, including its three-tab line, use copper-lined granules to help resist the algae that causes those streaks, and the algae coverage on its architectural lines runs longer. The granules slow the process rather than preventing it forever.
Which shingle is best for a Florida coastal home?
Architectural, if shingle is the choice; but on the immediate coast it is worth comparing against metal. The right answer depends on how long you intend to own the house.
