28 Jan 4 Common Aesthetic and Functional Problems of Roof Damage
Roofing problems can affect how your roof looks and functions. Fortunately, many of these problems can be addressed by a roof replacement expert. Universal Roof & Contracting discusses the common aesthetic and functional problems of a roofing system.
1. Leaks
A leaking roof is dreaded by every homeowner and not just because of the massive inconvenience it brings when it rains. Leaks rarely flow straight down, making it difficult to locate its source. They can be created by anything from impact damage to lack of maintenance to old age. Whatever the cause is, you should call a roofing contractor for repairs as soon as possible.
2. Wind Damage
Wind damage usually occurs at the roof’s edges, characterized by torn shingles. Starter strips may also have gaps between them and the roof, or loose starter strips and/or the drip edge. Components like flashing and vent boots may also get torn off the roof. As with leaks, it is a good idea to call for shingle roof repair as soon as possible, especially if the damage was incurred right after a storm.
3. Improper Attic Ventilation
Improper attic ventilation is another common roofing problem, which, if not addressed, can cause structural issues. The attic should have sufficient air circulation to prevent heat and moisture from getting trapped in the attic. Excess heat and moisture can damage the roofing structure, including the roof deck and rafters. Properly designed ridge vents should complement the air intake vents at the soffit and create continuous circulation.
4. Algae
While it doesn’t affect the roof’s performance, algae leaves unsightly black streaks on the roof. You can get rid of algae growth using algae-killing products, such as zinc strips or bleach, or by having the roof professionally cleaned. If your roof is up for replacement, choose specially designed shingles with algae-killing features.
