29 Mar Spring Cleaning – How to Detox Your Home
Excerpts from Jared’s Latest Article in the Lake Mary Healthy Living Magazine
Traditionally, spring cleaning has been considered wise after long winters of enclosed spaces, residual heating fuels and winter illnesses. Some ancient cultures practiced it as a religious observance to rid living areas of impurities. Interestingly enough, they were essentially expelling harmful household toxins, much like we do in our homes today. I know with the approach of spring and milder temperatures, my family and I look forward to opening up and airing out the house. A good spring cleaning is a great way to refresh and renew your living space – and clear out any unwanted accumulated clutter.
You may be unaware of potential health hazards that exist in your own home. There are a number of commonly used household items that are regularly produced but can be harmful to you and your family. This year, take your spring cleaning a step further by ridding your home of toxic products and chemicals. Here are some things you can be on the lookout for.
Harsh soaps and cleaning chemicals such as ammonia can trigger asthmatic attacks; and many oven cleaners and drain openers can pose a real health threat, especially in children. Synthetic fragrances and some antibacterial agents have been linked to immune and endocrine system dysfunction; they are commonly found in liquid soaps and detergents, as well as some deodorants, toothpastes and cosmetics. Better alternatives are unscented products with eco-friendly, all natural ingredients.
Lead-based paint, leaking furnaces and some flooring and paneling products can be sources of harmful gases or contaminants. Check with an environmental specialist if you think your surroundings contain a number of synthetic formaldehyde-based products. Also toxic pesticides and herbicides can be found in non-organic food as well as chemical weed and bug killers. Choose organic foods and switch to chemical free methods for combating bugs and weeds.
Health-threatening spores from mold and mildew can result from moisture and water leaks such as an old or damaged roof, flooding, bad drainage, poor ventilation, high humidity, faulty plumbing, or problems with your heating and air conditioning system. Immediate removal and repair by a qualified contractor is recommended.
Spring cleaning may not be a chore you look forward to every year, but the sense of accomplishment can be as therapeutic as the resulting physical benefits are healthy. Detoxifying your home will improve the health of your family as well as positively impact the environment.
