24 Feb Video: Hail Damages Seminole County Homes
Although skies appear calm now, many Sanford, Lake Mary, Longwood, and Heathrow residents saw damaging hail this weekend. Yesterday’s band of afternoon and evening storms passed through Seminole and Lake Counties producing tornado watches and warnings and delivered damaging winds, rain and hail. Universal Roof & Contracting storm damage experts have been visiting area homes since early this morning to estimate roof and exterior damage to area residents’ homes. Homeowners reported up to 1 3/4 inch hail stones, and fear for the damage the storm may have caused to their houses.
This intense force of nature begins as precipitation that falls from the sky in the form of small ice pellets. The pellets can grow in size to hailstones as large a grapefruits. Annually, hail can cause over 1 billion dollars in damage to US homes and agriculture. Roof damage can be severe; torn, lifted, and creased roof shingles are a common result of wind damage. Wind-driven rain forces moisture to penetrate the home perimeter on any vulnerable exterior surface. Circular areas of missing shingle granules, bruising, and spawling resulting from hail can be easily overlooked if not viewed by a properly-trained eye.
